Wireless Cable Modem/Networking

By Jill Taylor

To Be Wired or Not To Be : Wireless Cable Modem

A new debate among Internet users is whether or not to go with a wireless cable modem for their high-speed connection. Many say it is the networking of the future and others want to wait until the kinks are worked out or it is proven to be more convenient and efficient than a wired network. Maybe you are considering switching to wireless or you just want more information before making that decision.

How do wireless networks work? A wireless network uses radio or micro waves to transmit information between computers, unlike the traditional method of a phone or cable line. Because your computer and Internet connection will not rely on wires or cords, you will never have to deal with that tangled web underneath your desk again.

Pros:

  • Better mobility, you can go anywhere and have a wireless high-speed Internet connection.
  • As with most newer technological advances, the price for wireless products is decreasing over time.
  • Easier installation than its wired counterparts.

Cons:

  • The performance of a wireless Internet connection can be affected by weather, cordless phones and garage door openers to name a few.
Wireless networks are still more expensive than wired networks and do not have the same reliability that a wired network has.

What this boils down to is that if cost is not an issue and you are, above all, concerned with mobility, a wireless connection is the way to go. If you are more in need of reliability and performance, stick with a wired network at least until the next wave of wireless networks emerge.
