"Adelphia"

Adelphia just setup cable modem access for Hoosick Falls(4000) , NY so I really feel lucky considering the amount of people in Hoosick Falls. They enabled the service today. So I'm thinking about getting it. With Adelphia cable modems can I connect 2 more computers besides the one it's in. In other words can I get my 3 computers to run on the Adelphia Cable Access?

Wow, finally, someone who has Adelphia in thair area, everyone else has either @Home or Comcast. I have Adelphia in our area also. to share the Internet Acess, I think that you would either buy additional IP addresses fron Adelphia and then you could put it into the uplink of the Network hub of that of which is connected to all the 3 computers that you want the connection on, the only chort coming is the potential shortcoming is the extra cost for the IP address. You could also have 2 network cards on your base computer, one for the cable modem and the other to connect to your network of 3 computers. That way, you would nee software to assign IP address to the other computers, such as NShare from Miralink or the more well know Wingate, which is a proxy server. THat way, you would not need to but another IP address from Adelphia. The third possible way is to use an internet sharing router, about 275-400$ that allows ou to have an assigned IP address to each of the computers withou you needing to buy additional anything.
I think this is how it work, please, anyone, tell me if this is wrong.

So besides the NIC that Adelphia gives me , I would need 3 more NIC's to connect all 3 comps.?

Also would Win98 SE Internet Sharing Connection allow for all 3 comps. to be on at the same time?

I don't know anything about that Windows SE internet sharing, could any one please give me a link or some info? I'm wondering what's the safest way to connect 3 computers. I have a NAT currently with the 56k connection, we've ordered the cable, but it's not here yet. I heard that using a NAT is not the safest way to go. I already have a hub, but can sell it so I can get a Internet Router, would that be safer? Does anyone use the Linksys Router? The price is the lowest I've seen, $150. Thanks

I have worked for Adelphia for quite some time, and from an insiders view, running a network with Adelphia Powerlink is asking for trouble. It may work for a little while, but eventually it will cause a conflict with another Powerlink customer in your area.

IP addresses are issued on a lease basis. To run a network, you would have to have a static IP and the other comps on your network would be issued a 192.x.x.x IP. With Powerlink... you do not have a static IP. Once you cause a conflict on the network, you will be quickly discovered and spanked accordingly.

If you wish to have more than one computer accessing the internet via your one cable modem, I suggest a different service provider.

How can they find out? What's the penalty?

Also how would that cause a conflict? What are the chances that 2 computers will have the same IP address if it's randomly given out by a software program?

I thought ICS setup multi comps. to use the same IP address at the same time.

Does having few people signup for Powerlink decrease the risk of them finding it out?

How would Adelphia find out, if you have your Windows machine or a linux box also set up on DHCP and use IP Masquerading for the others the cable company wouldn't be able to resolve anything except that you have a windows machine or a linux box, whichever is directly connected

I've got Adelphia Cable Net. & 3 PC's sharing the service via a LinkSys Router. It was a no-brainer to set up & the tech even told me the steps I'd need to take b4 I had it set up.
