"Initial investigations into buying and setting up wireless router and laptop..."
Hi all.

I am looking for advice on setting up a wireless link between a wireless router (of course) and a laptop, which I wish to use around the house/garden. Can anyone tell me the details surrounding this goal, and perhaps give any sources of further information? Indeed, input from those who already running such a set-up would be much appreciated...

Put simply, I’m looking for recommendations on:

-- purchase of a good laptop
-- purchase of some kind of receiver card for laptop?
-- purchase of wireless router
-- any other things/circumstances that should be considered that I haven’t thought about!

I am currently working from a central PC with broadband in an upstairs room. No purchases have been made as yet, although in regards to the Wireless Router I've done some initial investigations into some of the current NetGear equipment available…

Any help much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

David.

Go to Radio Shack and tell them what you have told us, they can be quite knowledgible and it sometimes helps to speak with someone rather than browse a web page. Prices are about 65 for wireless router and 40 for a Network Interface Card for the wireless network. Newer laptops may have this capability already built inside, it might say something like Wi-Fi capable.

Have Netgear 54 "G" type wireless router with the same for laptop pcmcia. E-mail if you need help configuring, I've been through it all with the Netgear (beeen very pleased with Netgear components).
