"Buying a Linksys router"

I want to share my optimim online cablemodem and be able to share files and a printer.

If I buy a Linksys 4port router will I be able to share the cable modem? If so, will the following setup(s) work?
/printer
cablewire-cablemodem-router-computer #1
|
computer #2

OR

cablewire-cablemodem-computer #1
|
router - computer #2

Where do I connect the printer??

Thank you in advance!!

You shouldn't have a problem with the Linksys router. Cable modem output to WAN input on your router, 4 outputs for 4 computers. 3 different configs for the printer. 1:printer has an ethernet hook-up (most unlikely). 2:Get an ethernet print server box (this will put the printer on your side of the network). 3: set printer up on a PC and turn on the file and print sharing and share printer for others (This PC will of course need to be on to print from others). Certain Canon printers I've seen cannot be shared this way. I found a HP jetdirect external print server that was easy to set up and printer is seen by all. This will take up one of your 4 ports on the router. Suggest to get a hub to increase your open ports from the router. Hope this helps.....
