"Cable Modem/Network Problem!" |
I have a very strange problem with a home network of 2 computers connected to a ezxs55w linksys switch. I have hooked up a cable modem to the uplink port, but the computers cannot access the internet. The computers are running Win2000. This setup has worked fine in the past , but now will not work. Anyone know what I can do?

You must hook the cable modem up to the "wan" port on your router if you have one!

Long shot, but I had same problem at same time. Before you pull your hair out, Optimum (my ISP) made some service changes and I did not get back online until I removed and reinstalled all of my network cards and drivers and connection sharing software.

I agree you need to connect to the WAN port.. here's my problem.. same as yours?I have a linksys four port router with cable ISP. It works perfectly on one computer but I can't access the internet from the second one. All protocols are set properly and the winipcfg shows all correct settings. I can ping the internet and get a reply 100% of the time from DOS. My browser won't access the internet even if I type in the sites IP address. Linksys tech. support has given up. I have reformatted my computer, removed the dial up option, installed new cables without sloving the problem. Any suggestions?.. you may email if you like ron_devue@yahoo.com thank you

Ok some cable companies use your MAC address to get the IP via DHCP if your. Hence during setup the tech took down your MAC and now if you try to connect the second IP the DHCP does not recognize the MAC and you are screwed BUT Linksys now offers MAC cloning in their newest firmware, the only downside is the NIC that you have now will go bye bye since you will clone the MAC of your current working NIC into the router and the router will ID itself as your NIC while it will give your PC's Internal IP's like 192.168.0.1 (gateway to your router). Now your router and your modem is configured for DHCP so you must disable DHCP in your router do this by typing \\192.168.0.1 in explorer window this will route you to your gateway (which is your router). If you by any chance use the same MAC NIC as your router MAC (the one you copied) then well your IP will know what's you up to and YOU ARE BUSTED!!! They might disconect you since it gives hell to their servers (i.e. conflicting MAC addressses can't exist on the net). Hope it helps
