"Comcast Intenet service"
I am a customer of Comcast cable in the Philadelphia area. About a week ago they transferred my neighborhood to their own network. The first few days were fine, but then came Tuesday night. From Tuesday night to early Thursday morning I had not internet service. I called customer support on Wednesday, and they had no idea what the problem was (so they scheduled someone to come out on Saturday!). Early Thursday morning I checked my connection before going to school, and I found it was working.
The next day someone from Comcast called and asked if my service was back on. When I told them yes they said they had been having trouble with their servers. Earlier today (Saturday) I am experiencing infrequent service (it will work for 5mins and then go down again). I came to the conclusion that it was something with their DHCP servers since when I checked the status on my linksys router sometimes it would give me weird readouts (IP addresses of 0.0.0.0, and 192.165.100.1). So when it did come back on for a brief period I decided to seize that moment and capture that IP address. I then set up my
outer to use a static IP (As I did when I had @home), and since then everything was fine. Then I went to setup the software they recommended for
setting up e-mail and web space. This was so frustrating that I gave up after about an hour of trying to get it to work. I suspected it had
something to do this my router so I tried to connect my router directly to my computer, but that also did not work. I just though I would let you know about some of the problems I have been experiencing with Comcast's new network, so you can let you viewers know how to solve some of these problems. This will save them the frustration.

Update: My uncle works for Comp USA (They are one of the many stores that sells Comcasts internet service), and he told me they just got a letter from Comcast. This letter told them not to sell routers to Comcast Internet coustomers, because they will no longer allow the use of these routers. Instead they want you to pay anywhere form $5-$10 for an extra IP. You might be able to get around this by cloning the MAC address of you Primary computers NIC into the router (That way Comcast might just read the router as your computer.). I just though I would let eveyone know since I have not recieved any info on this matter from Comcast. If they do pull this crap and I can't get around it (Legally) i might just switch to RCN.

Personally, I think it is complete bullshit if any ISP cuts you off for using a router or more than one computer.

So what if you hang 20 or even 200 computers off of one cable modem? You are paying for the modem and you have a set amount of bandwidth so what gives them the right to price gouge.

Greedy bastards. My router is a "firewall" and I use "vmware," I would like to see any tech support chump try and dispute me on that.

Mike

as a side note, vmware lets you run multiple OS's off of one comp all with separate ip addys, mac addresses etc.

The problem is that ISPs, like health clubs and airlines, oversubscribe their service. If all the paying customers decide to use their purchased product at the same time calamity would ensue.

It is in the ISPs interest to minimize your bandwidth usage so that they may pile more customers (at $40+/month) onto your cable. If your 200-computer network is keeping the cable modem saturated, then that is that much less bandwidth to sell to your neighbor.

That's why they care about your router.

Comcast SUX big time. I had them (unfortunately) for cable TV in Virginia a few yeqars back, and had them coming out almost on a weekly basis to work on a recurring problem with my reception. After 8 MONTHS, I FINALLY figured out the problem. After emailing a rather heated nasty-gram to them, I ended up with an 8 month credit to my account. (we moved out of state 2 months later and they had to write me a check)

Now, in the Dallas TX area, comcast has taken over the @home service, and we're now having problems with out HS internet. It's been MONTHS, and they STILL HAVEN'T fixed the problem. As for the LONG waits for service calls.......just get used to it. It's comcast......
