"please help, i need it bad"
hi. i just got a cable modem like 2 weeks ago. when i did the speed test here, it said something like You: 198...then i got a speed tweak, and the test says usually around 488 or 532, which i'm happy about. but the problem is, when i download something from like download.com or something, i never goes that fast while downloading. it's usually like from 12kbps to 200kbps. but if it starts at like 200kbps, it just drops the whole time until it ends on something like 40kbps. is there anything out there i can get to help my download speed? thank you for any help.

The download speed depends mostly on the speed of the website you are downloading from. Try to downlaod from different sites like zdnet.com you can also download a program called "download accelerator plus" free from zdnet.com or download.com, that will speed up your download speed as well.

Let me know if this helped

SOMETIMES IT DOES NT MATTER HOW FAST YOUR CONNECTION IS. IF A WEB SITE IS OVERWHELMED ITS GONNA BE SLOWER.

Download accelarator is great for dial up connections but with broadband you shouldn't need to use it. Besides that all they do is, eat up resources. Go to this site http://www.speedguide.net/ there is a thorough explanation on how to tweak your registry or you can download there program called cablenut to do the tweaks for you. Go to http://www.dslreports.com/tools and run several speed test before and after you tweak your registry. Make sure that the speed test is the only thing runing so you can get accurate results. Good Luck and they suggest backing up your registry before changing it.

actually im pretty sure that the difference between the 400-500 and the 40 speeds is the unit of speed. if you are using IE6 or a regular browser to download from a site, it is meaured it kBps but speed tests measure kbps, the capital and lowercase b's make a big difference. usually you can divide kbps by 10 to get your kBps speed. by the way, download accelerator plus is just a piece of crap that installs ad programs on your pc

I found a great registry editing program on the front page of Speedguide.net http://www.speedguide.net/ It's a resonably foolproof way of editing your registry settings without having to go and do it manually. It's called tcp/ip optimizer and the link is here. this link is directly to the download or follow the above link to go to the site itself. http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe
The program is good for all connection types.
