"Windows XP quick tweak"
Ok...here's a trick in Windows XP that should speed things up significantly. Follow these steps and you should see huge improvements on your speeds.
1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator priviliges.
2. start - run - type gpedit.msc
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Hilight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0

Now, reboot to make sure that the new settings 'take', and you should notice a huge improvement. Good luck!

Well, if your on a DOMAIN and your not the one that sets policies on your network, thats why. Easier way to get it is:
control panel/admin tools/Local security policy then move on from the above instructions.

i mentioned if your on a domain and blah blah policies is because your domain admin probably set your policies already. If you cant get to it your SOL. If you can't log onto your PC as the admin, forget it also.

I have implemented this, but I am trying to see exactly what performance increase I should see. Are my pages supposed to load quicker? under what browsers? does it make a difference? Please let me know, I'm not trying to be funny here, I'm serious.

QoS Packet Scheduler (Quality of Service) only works if you're entire network supports (=your ISP) this. Means that routers, switches and so on must support this Service or else it won't mather.

QoS is a thing for the future but not highly used right now.

I TOTALLY AGREE THIS DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
TRY SETTING IT TO THE OTHER END OF THE SCALE ie 90-100%, AND STILL YOUR DOWNLOADS WILL BE THE SAME.

This is what I did. Disable QoS AND File and Print Sharing while you are there.

I am "Administrator" using XP Home but I do not have "gpedit.msc". I also did a search to no avail. Should I have this file? Can you tell me how to fix this please. Thanks.

I read somewhere that the 20% you gain by doing this tweak is used by Windows for sending automatic updates. So do we still get these updates (I guess they're important)
if we set the figure at '0'? Or do they just take longer to come through?
