What is the fastest commercially available
internet connection?

I don't care how much it costs.

Well that I know of a T3 (45MB connection) is the fastest avaiable and that'll run you 20-40k a month (not kidding). If you meant a home user connection DSL and Cable are the fastest. Depending on your area DSL could be better for you or not. Typically Cable offers much more reliable connections than DSL does (again depending on your area) In my area (Miami, Florida) I have tried both DSL and Cable and I decided to stay with cable for the following reasons. 1. Reliablity I have had no down time whats so ever DSL was out at least once a week. 2. Speed. Dsl was averaging about 1MB connection where as my cable has been rock solid no matter what time of day at 1.5MB and during off peak as high as 2.5MB. I would do some research and ask people in your area who might have or tried dsl and cable and see what they have to say about it. Good luck!

Wow! What is the name of your cable ISP? It's obvious your cable ISP was not RoadRunner nycap.rr.com which is slower than a dialup connection.

Regarding the first reply, T3 speeds vary depending which country your in, in the UK the average T3 line will only go up to 10mb/s but you can bond multiple lines through your router and so get to 45mb/s.

But if your saying forget about money then hey, you can have some serious speed. For about £130,000 ($200,000) you can have a fat optic line that will take you to about 145MB/s but if your made of money then sod it ask the local communications company if they will lay a main pipe to your premises and then you'll be able to hit up 10gigs/s (wud that be fast enough for u?) but that will definightly cost more than the price of a McDonalds put it that way, Oh yes, if you were to get one done let us know and i will be around to play -

Be careful though, (cos depending on what your going to be using the connection for) the government wud probably have a little look at what you were using a line that fast for as they are a little nervous about that sort of thing!!! Enjoy!

There is a SONET, http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/S/SONET.html
then there is OC-12 which is a fiber optic line. http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/O/OC.html

That is expensive stuff and used as internet backbones and EDU's.

OC-192 is a 10 Gbit connection. That is obtained through fire optics. I have heard there is a OC-256, but don't know for sure.

An OC-256.
New fiiber optic wires are coming out 1GB with a big B in less than 10 sec. Now there is tecnology that bursts 640 MB is less than 6 sec. This was created so it can't be traced.

Fiber goes up to an OC-768/STS-768 which is equal to 40.000 Gbps. For the really high bandwidth nuts you can get a 64WLx10Gbpsx4FP for a total of 2.560 Tbps.

i believe u people got off track with your answers
as he wanted to know what speed was good for him. obviously no-one can afford the acess lines ya'all were talking 'bout. Next time read the Question. As for myself, i have cable. hamilton, ontario. and after tweaking, i average 1400 kb/sec downloading, 550 kb/sec uploading. * i would not sugest you tweak it the way i have as i have problems 3-5 times a month. and down for those days to reconfigure. even though i download mp3's in 4 seconds. so i would suggest cable. it's cheap and easy to install, but buy a 10/100 yourself "to save money"

Hey Ken,

Maybe you didn't read the question. He asked "What is the FASTEST COMMERCIALLY available
internet connection?"

COMMERCIALLY not publicly available is the key point of that question. Now cable or DSL is the fastest Publicly available solution but not commercial.

OC-255 13.21Gbps (Gigabits per second) is the fastest speed I know of but I don't think it is available to lease from anyone currently. OC-192 10Gbps is the fastest commercially available that you can lease from UUnet, Qwest or another provider like them. I would guesstimate that the cost on a OC-192 is over US$500,000 a month, you would have to contact a provider to find out a specific price.

15. "RE: speed"
there are a couple ways of answering this question

Answer #1

price totally not a issue
then answer is simple
OC-768/STS-768
(this is true answer to stated question though i doubt any people/non corp/business can afford it)
what are these speeds(2.560 Tbps = very fast)

Answer #2

afordable by sonme of us
those who need/want the very best
then here is answer what $1,100 per month will get you in the NYC region
SONIC PERFORMANCE FROM LIGHTPATH
(sonic is ofcourse availible in other areas from other providers)

what is this service
a digital cable reduntant self reparing isp supported by a backbone of OC-48 (2.4 gigbytes a sec...extremly fast)
at the customer end it gives T3 speeds 45 MB a sec

If you really need the best & are able to pay a bit more than answer #2 is the way to go as a private consumer
If you are a business in need of the best period
than answer #1 is the way to go

If anyone needs further information on sonic
please feel free to look & check the following site www.lightpath.net

Good day all

Hahaha...T3? DSL? CABLE? FIBRE OPTIC? SATELLITE? Think faster!! Yes, recenlt I got some inside info from a tech. in the industry (he currently works for Intel) and he told me about speed connections YOU CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE!!! It was a bit too high-tech and vague for me to understand and too confusing for him to explain it in simple English, but from what I understood. He was talking about some technology that was implementing ORGANIC CONNECTIONS of some sort!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS BLEW ME OUT!! ALL I COULD PICTURE WAS A BUNCH OF LITTLE BACTERIA AND MICRO-ORGANISMS ON A LEASH WORKING FOR US!!! How Absurd is that!!! But hey, going into space was also ABSURD a few thousand years ago!! WITH THE SPEED OF TECHNOLOGY THESE DAYS, I WOULDN'T DOUBT IT. He told me of some way that manufacturers will make so-called ORGANIC PC's. He said the technology implements some totally wierd way of computing. It was way too confusing for me to grasp. And NO, I'm not bullshitting. I can understand Skeptics, but not Cynics. Anyways, Fibre Optic is nothing compared to speeds that are available to a select few these days. I'm sure you could get it if you had enough money. T3 will probably be used in homes in a few years. Who knows. Also, another technology I found out about was IBM's recent breakthrough in a technology that can get a single proccessor to speeds of upto 200GHz.!!!!!!! That seems Insane as of right now!! That is 20,000MHz. folks!!! You'll be seeing me making FINAL FANTASY on such a system if I got my hands on it. Better yet, you could probably make something way better than FINAL FANTASY.
