"Cable splice??"
My cable modem is extremely slow - when I run speed tests on the server computer connected to the computer, I usually get about 750 kbps - my friends with the same service get like 1000-1500. The cable is connected to a two-way splice, then connected to the wall... will that cause this major performance hit?? It could be the computer - a cyrix 333mhz with 96mb ram. I haven't run any tweaks yet, but I dont' know if it'll help.

splitters do effect the signal to the modem.

I can't remember what the tech was telling me but there are different types of splitters that split the signal different ways and you want to give most of the signal to the cable modem.

Hopefully someone else can shed some more light on the subject.

1. Get a High Perfomance Splitter 1 GHz available at Home Depo.
2. Make sure your spliter is connect to the ground either by TV cable itself, or you can ground it by connecting to the ground contact of electrical outlet or to the water pipe.
3. Use standart coax cable.
4. Make sure that cable modem uses dedicated line.(line after the splitter feed only cable modem).

Actually You want your Db to be as close to zero as possible and want your transmit level to be around 48 Another thing about speed is you could have a line thats allowing ingress to come in and slow you down or could be a strand touching your center condutor on your cable Also if you are on a node where alot of illegals are connecting by just sticking a copper center conductor into the cable tap with out proper connector this will also cause slow speeds depends on alot of things Call cable co and have them trouble shot issue. This happened to me and they fixed the problem by cutting off over 100 illegals in a trailer park about 1mile from my house

Only use splitters supplied by the cable company. Cable companies used splitters made by companies like Regal. They are so much better than any splitter you can find in Radio Shack or Home Depot. The splitters you buy in the stores are marketed as high proformace, but this is a lot of laughable hype. In reality they have very little RF sheilding which allows a great deal or ingress/egress. Ingress/egress equal poor speeds.

With splitters, always make sure the F connectors are tightened with a wrench and not your fingers.

Never ground a spliter to the "ground contact of electrical outlet". This is not an NEC approved grounding options. You shouldn't worry about grounding. This is a safety issed not a speed issue. Leave this to the installers. They will ground the service drop either to the power meter, power mast, ground wire, or metal plumbing.

Use the best quality RG6 coax cable money can buy. Don't buy it just becuase it has a cool name like Monster, or it has gold F connectors, or it is hyped as being high performance. You need RG6 cable with a thick center conductor, dialectric foam insulation, and braided steel RF sheilding. When in doubt ask the cable company not the clerk at Radio Shack.

All that help is right but. The Signal will not effect speed It will effect the power level at the modem tho. Either your online or off. After you have block sync. During rapid weather change if you have a poor signal you may lose block sync. The Noise part is correct this can effect speed. But 96 ram could be ok I would look here first. make sure you have active desk top OFF and shut down all programs running then do your test. If your running NT,2000,XP the recommeded is 128 ram to 256 ram. sounds like maybe your out of ram so virtual memory kicks in and uses part of your hard drive in place of ram so it will read off the hard drive which is very much slower. Also in XP if your losing packets you may want to go into the network setting tcp/Ip stack and make sure Qos is NOT checked that may help. Also are you using a USB or PCI card If your Using a USB make sure you are NOT using a USB hub or splitter off the USB. Plug directly into the back of the pc from modem.
Ifs its pci thats even better. If all else fails Pray.

Hello, I own the small web hosting company Exalted Hosting, My servers are kept at a first class Datacenter with Time warner connections,

But from home, i need to transfer data to and from my computer to my 16 servers, I do use Road Runner, at the moment, My download is clocking in at about 2,300 megabits (you heard right) and upload about 400 megabits.

I used a optimization program to get those speeds, I tested bandwith on bout 10 different sites including Road Runner Wisconsin homepage, Cnet, and dsl reports.

go to this link to see my test from road runner meter, www.exaltedhosting.com/road/1.jpg

that was a littlw while ago,

before i used this program, i was getting less than what they have listed for cable.

my system is XP home, 512 meg ram, 2 ghz, 120 gig hard drive.
I have 2 splitters before my cable modem, both from wal mart, both 1,000mhz splitters i got for 3 bucks, also, before the splitters, their is 45 feet of coax running into my house to the basement. and no cable amp.

Here is the link to the program, i found, for Road Runner, use auctomatic configuration C.

don't listen to bad reviews, it does work, i used this on my desktop(specs above) and my laptop, 266mhz PII 2 megs video ram, 4 gig HD and 382 megs sd ram(100mhz)

Hope i helped ya out a bit,
