"Loosing Connection"
I am pulling out my freakin' hair!!!!!!!!!
I have two computers connected to a cable modem (road runner) and they are networked with a Linksys Router. (Sharing cable connection)
When both computers were running windows 98 I had no problems. I upgraded one computer to XP and now the other computer that is still running 98 keeps loosing it's internet connection. I have to reboot to get the connection back on, only to loose it again later. It doesn't make sense. The XP computer stays connected forever but the 98 has to be rebooted all the time. They are both on the same modem running through the same router but one doesn't stay connected. I have tried everything. I even replaced the Network card in the 98 computer. Does anybody have ANY idea what is going on? - Dave

Dave-

Never heard of a problem like that, might be something screwy with your 98 machine. Don't you set up your comps to have static ip's behind your router? Might want to try that.

Unfortunately, I have both problems; loosing connection with my ATT ISP and 98se can not get IP address from my DI-704P. The first one, right now, I believe is my cable modem's problem. The second, can not figure out why, but easy solution that I am doing is give a static IP address.

Your problem is the operating systems. Put both of them on XP and your problem should go away. My husband and I have the same problem and the only difference in our computers is the operating system (he has xp and I have 98se. We don't have cable..we have a satelite...and it's supposed to be faster than the cable...his is even faster than T1..but mine is usually only about the same speed as 128K modem...grrrr! Well...in a few days that will change for me, getting new operating system on mine to! Hope this helps!

OS's have nothing to do with it because they are connecting through a router. But whatever floats your boat.

My cable modem blows away a T1 in dl, like most cable modems do.

My husband's computer (xp) gets over 3 times faster than a T1. Mine is about as fast as a 128. The only dif is the os. That is the only thing that it could be...(all boats aside). They also told me at my isp that is the problem with xp...it has a hard time running with 98 on a network.

Has anyone thought of the possibility of a stolen ip with the computer you are having problems with?

I too am having disconnect problems with a Motorola SB5100. 5 Comcast techs have told me not us. Motorola says not us (but did offer to switch modems). My upsteam level is 53 and downstream is -5. Comcast (ok), Motorola upstream to high, may cause disconnects. What is the poor consumer to do?
