"SB4100 Disconnecting (differnet from others)"
Hello,
I have noticed lateley that my 4100 modem will disconntect itself. The power stays on but the receive, send, online buttons go off. It will then go to receive and the send button will blink. I cannot access the net while this happens. It may do this for a few minutes or a few hours but it then connects again. It will be ok for a while and do it again. I contacted Adelphia which is my provider and they said that my modem was sending all kind of odd information (i can't remember what he said it was sending). I needed a technician to come out and look at the sytem to see if it was there problem or if it was my modem. Does anyone know how i can self check my modem to see if it is working ok? Is there any way I can check the signal coming in to see if this is ok? I am going by the tech that my modem may be bad or the signal is bad. I have used it tonigh for about 4 hours with no problem. Any help or ideas on what is causing this would be great. Thanks allot, Ray W.

I am having the same problem with Roadrunner and the same modem. I replaced the modem and still have the same problem. When it's working - it's great. Disconnects for no apparent reason.

You could take a look at the modem's internal webpage and look at the log although it probably will not be of much help. http://192.168.100.1/ is the internal page for the modem.

I had a similar problem to where the modem would lock up on me on a daily basis in the afternoon. Powercycling would fix it or it would 'usually' correct itself after enough time went by.

Hopefully the tech will be able to better diagnose the problem.

Can you tell me more about this web page? Where did you get that url? Is each modem unique or is does it rely on the brand & model of the modem. I am having problems with Motorola SB4200. Cable company says it is my proble. I am interesting in troubleshooting my computer. (Or is my cable company jerking me around?)

What do they say the problem is? You don't post much about the problem so I can't help.

I have the SB4200. Its been running fine for 3 months and now Im experiencing the same as you. The tec came out and checked my signal. He said it was bad. Apparently my cable comes into the house splits a least once if not twice. Then runs to the other end of the house where it hooks to my modem. He thinks the splitters are going bad. He suggested I either move the modem closer to where the cable enters the house or get a dedicated line put in for my internet connection.

before going to the expense of paying for a dedicated line I would try to replace the splitters or take the tech's other suggestion of moving it closer to where the cable comes into the house before it splits several times.

4200 is better than 4100.
Check the signal levels.
Check the internal web page. If the cm is transmitting to close to 55 or 58 dBmV. You have problems in your drop.

Open internet explorer, in the address bar enter
192.168.100.1 and push enter the modem internal
pages will open up(assuming you can connect to the modem). Click on signals and take note of the downstream power level, snr (signal to noise ratio)and upstream powerlevel. What you are experiencing is called an rf issue, the lights on your modem indicate rf and the signal levels you retrieve should prove rf.
The serfboard modem is a good one and it is unlikely that it is the modem causing problems. The source of the rf issue may be miles from your home or inside the house(loose connection to the modem or frayed cable)
Remember it is important to power cycle your modem at least monthly(better weekly)and all that means is unplugg the power cord from the back of the modem and leave it unplugged for at least 1 minute.
