"SB4100 and my router don't work all of a sudden" |
I have a SB4100 modem, a linksys router and network consisting of one ME PC and one XP PC. Until this past weekend all was well, never had a problem. Now all of a sudden neither computer will access the internet thru the router. The local network still works fine but to access the internet I have to connect directy to the modem. both PCs connect fine that way but neither will connect thru the router. The router is ok because I switched it out with the one from my home and it works fine there. The technician from adelphia came out and naturally didn't have a clue about my problem and was no help at all except to check the IP addresses and stuff like that. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the latest, but let me explain my situation so you'll be able to follow what I've tried. I have 2 adelphia accounts, one at my home and another at my fabric shop which is approx 5 miles from home. I have an identical setup at both places, 2 computers that share the internet connection thru a linksys router. Never a problem in over a year until last Saturday. That's when this problem started at my shop, everything's fine at home. After I'd tried all the usual fixes I called the local Adelphia office and they assured me that no changes had been made and that they could only provide service to my building and did not support networks. When pressed, they assured me that I should be able to operate both computers with the router. I insisted that they send a technician anyway and he too assured me the same but was not able to get the network to work. Now I've already said that the local network works fine, as well as both computers when connected directly to the modem. I had already switched out the moden and router with the one at my home and both work like a charm there. I have an older computer running Win 98 that I had replaced and hadn't used for 6 months or so. I unhooked the other PCs so that it was the only one associated with the router and modem, didn't work! did work fine when the router was bypassed. So I brought computer, modem, and router all home, set them up identical to the way they were at my shop with the only difference being the difference in location. Worked like a charm! This tells me that although they say it's the same signal and service as my home, they're wrong. I believe I can rule all the hardware out. I suspect they are assigning the IP differently, what do you think?

I'm very relieved to have it back to normal, but it still doesn't make sense to me that before I did the upgrade I brought modem, router and computer all home and they worked fine here. It's a head scratcher to me.

In this cases has to do with the IP. Make sure your catv company is assigning valid IPs to your router and the PC as well.
