"Problem with spikes in service"
Hi, I just found this forum and wonder if you could possibly help. This is the situation. I have Comcast Cable for interest only (not tv). I have one computer hooked up in my home office together with a Linksys router. My husband uses my laptop in the livingroom (one room over) to watch the MLB live feed through RealOne.

Here's the problem, the live feed keeps breaking up and stalling out completely. First I called RealOne and was talked through a test and they said it was due to all the "spikes" we were getting and it was my IPS's problem. Okay. Called Cable they did a test over the phone and found that yes there might be a problem.

Cable came out. Guy knew nothing about live feeds or the MLB stuff. Pur in a new cable modem, although he said there was nothing wrong with the one he switched out. Found there was a break in the cable outside on the house (probably due to a squirrel eating through the cable). He said there was probably water in the cable which would cause problems. He replaced the cable and all the connectors. Okay. Fine. He left.

That night same problem. The baseball game seems to start off fine and then the picture starts to break up, stands still - comes back three hits later. You get the picture. Husband is ready to through the laptop out the window. Sometimes he has to reconnect five times in one night.

Called cable they are coming Monday, but I had to fight to get someone here because no one seems to understand what I'm saying.

When cable guy was here he did a test on the speed which is how I found this site. I have been checking it on a regular bases and it fluctuates from 114 to 119. According to this site since I have the cable modem I should be getting 150 is that right?

Anyone have any suggestions for me. Sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance.

Sorry I didn't read the message before I posted. Obviously the word "interest" should have been internet. There are probably other spelling errors, too. Sorry.

Nancy, it could be a number of things. What bandwidth of video is your husband trying to watch? He should have no problems up to about 300kbps but if he is higher it could be a problem because cable modems can not keep up with the throughput for extended periods of time. He may want to try a lower video setting. It could also be on the server side with Real, they may experience spikes every once in a while as well.
