"Roadrunner Problems"
I have a PC connected to RR for about 4 years now and no problems..UNTIL.. 2 days ago when I shut down the modem and tried to connect my new laptop to it. I use VPN on my laptop and connect normally thru a phone line. I plugged in the cable modem and then my laptop. I could get no good IP only 169. I then gave up and connected my PC back up. I couldn't get an IP on it either. I formatted my PC and installed 98se. NO good same thing. I formatted and tried 2000, no good, I now have put XP Pro back on and I do get my correct settings but I can't get on the net. I try ipconfig /renew and I get DHCP timeout. IF I do ipconfig /release I can clear it and then ipconfig again I do get back the correct settings. But still I cannot renew or get on the net. Roadrunner help desk is useless to me, they can't figure it out. I can't ping anything.
Here is my settings from ipconfig:
Connection specific DNS roadruuner.nf.net
IP address: 205.XXX.XXX.116
SUBNet:255.255.252.0
Gateway: 205.251.196.1
Any help would be great

I thought all you could get was a 169.xx IP address? If you are receiving all of this information you should be on the net. Check to make sure you VPN settings are disabled for regular usage.

How did you connect the previous 4 years??? Sounds like your laptop/VPN is the screwball.
