"Connection speed prob...PLZ HELP" |
I live in a rural area and have a cable internet(Only) connection. My house sits approx. 300 cable feet from the drop pole. Readings by the cable company note that I have large decrese in signal strength (db\'s) from the drop pole to my PC. I have a connection and am able to access the internet, BUT, I connect sometimes at speeds slower that my 56k dialup. average downloads are 15 - 25k max. They say that as long as I have a connection that they cant do anymore. They state that if they increase the signal at the pole it will effect the cable TV connection of my neighbors. They installed your basic sized cable. Question...is there something that I can do to increace the signal strength to my house to improve my connection. or is there something that I caould suggest to them to look at to improve my connection.I have tried all the speed boost out there and it does not help. I am lucky to surf at dial up speeds. Any help would be appreciated

First thing I would do is read the ISP agreement and see what speeds they guarantee, try and site stuff in the agreement that is in your favor. Who is your ISP? 15-25k max hardly constitutes as broadband. Always make sure you talk to a supervisor because in your case I doubt the regular tech support even know what to say. I don't know that much about cable tv and the interworkings but I don't know how increasing signal strength would be a BAD thing to your neighbors? I could be off however.

If the modem is linked IE 2 lites lit you don't need more signal. Most times it is the setup on your machine. Call your company and talk to them don't ask for a supervisor start at the bottom and work your way up

Try to have a friend come by with a laptop or some other computer and try to compare your connections with the same modem. Someone else said that as long as your modem has block sync (solid cable light) then most likely there is some application running in the background on your machine that is slowing down your connection...ie Norton Utility or Mcafee Webscan. If both machines appear to be running slow then try to get the cable company to send a senior tech to test for noise in the line.It is possible that some disruption to the digital carrier is causing excessive packet loss. Dont try to get technical with the cable company, they tend to respond better if you tell them that you are having an issue with slow speeds and that your tv picture is fuzzy as well.

I am a tech manager of a cable company and first of all they should supply the right signal to you. They can and should fix that by installing a hardline cable to you or upgrading their plant at the poline or a small amplifier can be installed in your house but it requires an amplified reverse option as well. Athough modems really do not require a high level as the TV does. It should run on a digital signal that runs 10DB or more below the TV signals. Are you sure your computer is optimized for broadband? Go to test my speed.com and look for cable modem tweaks. You can analyze your receive windows and if needed download a free tweak to cure the problem. Good Luck!

joe is exactly right as far as the cable side of it.......make sure that you DO NOT have any RG59 cable from the pole all the way to your computer and IF you have other cable outlets that are active make sure there is a 2way(1000 MHz) right after the drop going to your house with one leg going to your computer and the other leg going to feed (the other splitter)the other rooms with cable you also have to make sure your computer is up to handling the speed all the spects are good..........another idea would be for the cable company to take there laptop out to your house and see if the speed is the same or better

another thing that i just thought of is that you could have a bad nic card or bad pci slot....and if your using usb try one of these other ways of hooking up the modem up to your computer !!

300' feet is a long distance. comcast likes to get within 160' tap to ground. 300' warrants a different cable im sure its not rg59 or it wouldnt work. its more then likely rg6 cable and the alternate is rg7 or rg 11 cable. call and request a service call.at the very least ask the tech for a seperate rg6 drop. comcast does this in cases like yours regulary. of course if u get a lazy tech which could be likely. u know the old saying about greasing. tip him to do it im sure he would be happy to do it then

also note that there r 2 way amps that will up the signal but i have never seen thesen amps increase the speed u see the modem adjust the transmitting power. if u have a sb4100 motorola you can open your internet explorer and type http://192.168.100.1 in the address bar and it will get you into your modem and see where your transmit powers r. note your downstream and upstream levels and post them.im sure we can help u.
