"Need help on buying a cable modem" |
I've been using cable internet service by ATT. I just realized that they're making a lot of money on cable modem rental ( 10$ / a month ). Is there any compatible cable modems out there that i can buy and not paying modem rental to ATT?. Is there is, which one is the best one? How much? and where is it sold at? Thanks a million guys, Anthony

you should be able to buy one and stop paying att, but you would have to check with them on that. A good cable modem is the Motorola Surfboard 4100, or at least that is what a lot of people have posted and I have had no complaints with mine. You might try pricewatch.com to compare prices on vendors. Mike

Or you can go to COMPUSA to get a Toshiba Cable Modem for about $299, other than Terayon Terajet Cable Modems they have one of the fastest. Or you can go to Compuplus to get a Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem, for about $107. It is very reliable, can work on many OSs including almost all Unix OSs and it has a stand by switch for extra security because it disconnects the computer from the modem but it leaves the modem connected to the Cable network.

5. "RE: Need help on buying a cable modem" |
I've been wanting to purchase one for the last 6 months. I have done extensive research on price. Currently the lowest price can be found at Amazon at $86 after $20 mail in rebate for a Best Data modem. Or else it's $106. Amazon doesn't specify which model it is. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000056Q1H/qid=1001706243/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/002-0762147-1995211Other modems: linksys BEFCMU10 $106 Motorola SB4100 $107 (note most others have 1yr warranty, this one has 2 yrs on parts and labor) at amazon it's $130; the range I found is $107 to $230 http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3/273 Zoom 5011 $105 So I would say that the lowest is $86 and the average lowest is about the low 100's ($105 - $110). good luck, V.

6. "RE: Need help on buying a cable modem" |
I have the same problem, When I buy a CM I get rid of a monthly charge. But as a network type I am more interested in any special features the CM might have and what they could do for me. I know that ATT won't send me packet's(data) any faster than they chose to. So faster speeds are out unless there is some way to trick ATT's servers. I am sure they read these news groups and are out to prevent customers from getting out of the box they put us in. Dual CM's is such a trick. I am more interested in features that will allow me to know the network I am on better.

7. "RE: Need help on buying a cable modem" |
Anthony, I am going to simplify your problem. I am a contractor for AT&T, I install and service High Speed Data. First of all, double check that price with AT&T, they just changed it to 3 dollars a month removed from your bill if you have your own modem in the Massachusettes area. If that is all you are going to save, then ask yourself if its really worth it, I have been to service calls where the poblem is the customer supplied modem, and we have to charge them for the service call and they are still on the hook for replacing the modem. If you decide to buy a modem, you will not see a difference in speed, they all are capable of handling more than AT&T is giving you, and they all can be networked. I have seen that a lot of people are recommending the Motorola SB4100, great modem, however I would go with the Motorola SB4101, just a newer version of the 4100. The reason I like the Motorola is because it is addressable, type 192.168.100.1 into your browser and it gets you into the modem without a password required, and check out the status, the log, and help section. It lets you know what your modem is up to. Software is available for the Lan City modem to open it up and steal all the bandwith from your neighbors, however, most cable companys have pretty much done away with them. Good Luck.

Motorola SB4101 and not the SB4200?What is the logic in that since the 4101 is discontinued according to the motorola website and the 4200 is a much newer model. http://broadband.motorola.com/noflash/surfboard.html just my $.02 Mike

9. "Cable modem & TV connection" |
Sorry to bother you! I've been subscribing AT & T Cable modem about a year. I was able to watch basic cable channels until about two weeks ago and all of sudden I am not getting cable but Internet works fine. I am getting only channel above 70.If I install RF amplifier (10db boost) I get little more channels with snow. I think I might be to get better signal if I put 36 db amplifier. Definitely, I don't want to pay Cable service and Internet connection to AT&T whcih is trying to monopoly the market. If I have to subscribe both, I'm gonna cancel Internet service! Could you advise me how to solve this problem. Thank you so much for your consideration in advance!

Cheap is what it is. I bought a "new" 3-com cable modem off of Ebay. Paid 25.00. It was on the list of modems that work for my ISP. IT DIDN'T WORK. It was made specifically for COmcast@home service. Bought a Motorola 4200 from Best Buy for 89.00, -40.00 rebate, = 50.00 and if you sign up for service through Best BUy you get another 50.00 rebeate. Modem is basically free. This applies to service with InsightBB in Indiana and may be available where you are.

13. "RE: Need help on buying a cable modem" |
Dear Mr. Anthony: You can purchase a good quality cable modem from Best Buy or Office Max. Best Buy will be cheapest price. Or you can find someone on E-Bay that has a used one. Expect to pay $129.00 apx. for a brand new one. Used not more than $60.00 Also, if you are using A.T.& T. Broadband Internet Services. Watch out for them, they are blatant liars and record manipulators. I am in the process of suing their lying rumps right now. And have the Illinois and Indiana Atty. Generals after them, and am working on the U.S. Atty General for Interstate fraud and fraudulent billing and charging.
My service was supposed to be $35.95 per month since I use my own purchased modem, and they are charging $45.95 ten dollars more than committed too. They also billed this last months billing at $127.93 I believe it was for the month of February since I told them to kiss my ass. ANY ONE CHOOSING AT&T BROADBAND INTERNET SERVICES BE VERY VERY WARY ABOUT ANYTHING THEY TELL YOU. RECORD ALL CONVERSATIONS HAD WITH THEIR LYING REPRESENTATIVES AND BE SURE TO SAFEGUARD THOSE TAPES. THEY ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT WILL SAVE YOUR BUTT IN LITIGATION IF IT GOES THAT FAR. ALSO BE VERY VERY ASTUTE AND IMMEDIATELY FOLLLWING ANY DIFFICULTIES AND COMMITMENTS THEY MAKE TO YOU, WRITE DOWN ALL DETAILS. THEN WRITE A LETTER COVERING THE ABSOLUTE BOTTOM LINE KEY PROMISES MADE TO YOU BY THEM, or other matters discussed, AND MAIL IT TO THEM. This way it is on file and when they try to play games for shafting you or falsifying the records as they did to me, you will have atomic bombs sitting in their lap with which to stop their lies and fraud against you. Do not expect them to write back. A.T.& T Broadgand Interned services will ignore same. As they do not want to put anything in writing so that they can and will be bound by it They only talk. This way, it is worth the paper written on, and it can never be seen by anyone. Hence, it is your word against theirs and any falsified entries they made at their end in their computer database records. BE VERY VERY WARY OF A.T.& T. Broadband Internet service providers. Illinois Attorney Generals File number: 2003-CONSC-00071191
Indiana Attorney Generals File number: 02-CP-56322 Hope this helps.
