Check out http://www.zdnet.com and do a search for dsl or cable. The site has a lot of information and reviews, as well as links to other useful sites.Dial-up modems use regular phone lines and their fastest rating is 56k, but the phone line quality often has them at slower speeds.
DSL also uses phone lines, but you pay much more because the line is dedicated to your modem. DSL can reach speeds of 128k and should be more dependable than regular phone lines. You can use DSL without tying up your phone. I have heard that DSL requires more than one vendor (your local phone company, a DSL vendor, perhaps another company), and getting it installed correctly or resolving issues can be a problem.
Cable modems are very fast, about at least 1 MB per second, and can often reach over 4MB per second (I have it and mine does!). Pricing is about the same as DSL. If cable modem service is available in your area, it is very easy to install and very dependable.
If cost is an issue and you typically send text email and do an occasional large file download, then regular dial-up is probably ok. However, if you want fast downloads and transfer large files often, the additional cost of cable is worth it if you can afford it. Cable in my area is around $40 per month.
