"SB4220 Modem & Linksys Access Point Router" |
I recently hooked into Comcast fast internet and and am reasonably happy with it. But I need to connect another desktop and a laptop, so I got a Linksys router and have been trying for about a month to get it to talk to the modem (Motorola SB4220). After trying the patience of the Linksys,Comcast, and Motorola phone help desk folks I decided to talk to a friend who had the same setup. He took the router to his house, plugged it in to his SB4220 and it ran like a big ol' bird. I emailed Motorola with this info and they answered that some AT&T broadband customers had experenced this problem and they were working diligently on a solution. My friend is also on Comcast but in a town about 10 miles up the road so I guess my town is one where Comcast bought out AT&T's broadband. Has anybody heard about this or any work arounds, should I give Comcast their modem back and get a Linksys or whatever cable modem. Jim

When you plug in your router are you getting a wan connection to your modem? Make sure the lights are active on your router. At the very least you should be able to ping your modem from a computer behind your router and/or get to the modem's internal webpage. have you tried to update the firmware of the Linksys router to the newest available updates? Also, try to powercycle the modem and the router to see if you can get anything to go. It could be an external problem if Motorola sent you an email saying they were aware of it happening in certain instances. Mike

No Wan Connection but the LAN side is good...updated the linksys router to the latest & greatest to no effect....worked w/ linksys tech support trying every possible power cycle combination also no effect.... Motorola's email indicated the problem concerned AT&T broadband customers....Comcasts take was that they do not support routers so it doesn't matter if they work or not....as I said this router works fine on Comcast cable at a location about 10 miles from here...same modem same pc software...?????????....THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE

hmmm, that just plain sucks.I take it you have changed the ethernet cable between the router and the modem? You are not using a crossover cable between the 2 are you? Even if it is not talking to the modem you should be able to get the lights to click on when connected to each other. You could also try to clone the mac address of your computer to see if that helps then go through the powercycle cycle again. hmmm, sounds like you have been pretty diligent. Might just have to return the router and go with another brand? I can't think of anything else that might work off the top of my head. Mike

I just got a voice mail this afternoon from Comcast saying Motorola was recalling this modem because of bad firmware. They are supposed to send out the replacement modem in 6 to 10 days. I was about to switch to the phone company DSL but maybe I'll give the new modem a try. I kept Comcast because at least one pc could get on broadband but even that turned out to be untrue about half the time.
