"Where can I buy a cable modem?"
I am renting my cable modem from my isp. Can anyone suggest some sources (URL) where I can buy my own cable modem box? thanks, Jim Carter

We do not recommend you buy a cable modem unless your cable provider specifically supports modems purchased by consumers. Otherwise, you'll just be stuck with an expensive paper weight. If you can buy a modem, only buy one that is built to the DOCSIS standards and CableLabs Certified.

	Thank you for the advice. How about, where can I buy a Terayon Communications Systems' TeraPro Modem TCM110, or something equal? Why would anyone buy a cable modem if they could not be supported by one's isp cable company?

	The Terayon TeraPro modem is a proprietary product and will likely be obsolete within a few years. As a result, they are not typically sold at retail or via direct web channels. You are probably better off leasing a TeraPro modem from your cable provider and then buying a DOCSIS modem once your provider offers DOCSIS-based services.

Proprietary? Non-DOCSIS?

	Although I now understand that I cannot use a cable modem that is not supported by my isp, I would still appreciate being directed to a source which sells cable modems (DOCSIS) or otherwise, just so I can see what's available. Why does anyone buy a cable modem retail if you must use the propritary one leased by your isp? As you can tell, I'm not a pro at this. Thanks.
