Can I still use America Online or another ISP with a cable modem?
Yes, as long as the ISP makes its service available through TCP/IP, which AOL does. Within the AOL set-up menu, select TCP/IP, rather than a dial-in number, as your connection method. You'll find your AOL connection is much faster with a cable modem. And of course, you won't need to dial in to the service any more. AOL offers several lower-priced service tiers that make sense for cable modem users. For example, the "Bring Your Own Access" service is priced at $14.95 per month for unlimited access. Visit AOL's Member Services area for details.
Can I use my own Web browser or e-mail client with @Home or Road Runner?
Yes, you can use any Web browser or e-mail client. However, some ISPs provide technical support only for their software bundles.
Can I run a Web server through a cable modem connection?
It's technically possible, but prohibited by cable modem service providers -- a not-unreasonable position. The $40-per-month price for a residential cable modem connection isn't intended to cover the cost of handling the traffic generated by visitors to your server from the Internet at large. Most cable modem service providers offer free, personal Web site hosting on their servers as an alternative.
Can I send faxes with a cable modem?
Yes, but you'll need special software and an Internet fax service, such as JFAX.COM, which allows you to send and receive faxes via e-mail. If you already have a telephone fax modem, you can still use it to send and receive faxes after installing a cable modem.
Are dynamic or static IP addresses provided to cable modem users?
Most large cable modem service providers use dynamic Internet protocol (IP) addressing.
