VoIP - Dialing Up a New Generation of Phone Service

Are you old enough to remember rotary telephones? How about the first cellular phones that were about the size of toasters pressed against your ear? If you are, you no doubt appreciate the light years telephony has come now that you can use your broadband Internet connection as your phone line with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) digital phone services.

Local, National, and International VoIP Calls

Today you can make local, national, and even international calls using your broadband connection - often at prices significantly lower than traditional landline phone service. In fact, many VoIP providers offer unlimited local and long distance calls as part of standard monthly packages. And bundling your VoIP digital phone service with other offerings from your cable provider can mean even more savings.

VoIP providers offer different digital phone services. For example, with some companies you may have to call other people who use the same service; other providers let you call anyone with a telephone number, whether your call is to a landline, cell phone, or VoIP digital phone. Skype, a free computer program, lets you make calls over the Internet, but you can only call other Skype users when using the program.

The Benefits of VoIP Digital Phone Services

If you make the switch from your landline to digital VoIP, in many cases you'll be able to keep your existing phone number. Plus you can choose a digital phone number in a different area code which is a great way to save money on long distance calls by setting up a digital phone to reach relatives, business associates, or friends in another state.

Using online features from your VoIP provider, you can track your phone usage and telephone calls online and use a wide variety of other services. These include such popular phone features as voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, unlimited local calls, call transfers, 3-way calling, do not disturb, anonymous call blocking, caller ID blocking, call screening, call return (*69 service), speed and repeat dialing, and many other services. You might even be able to add a fax line, virtual phone number, toll-free number, and visual voice mail.

What You Need to Set Up VoIP Digital Phone Service

All you need for VoIP service once you've signed up with a VoIP provider is a high-speed broadband Internet connection - through a cable modem, DSL connection, or local area network - and either a traditional telephone connected to your computer with an adapter, a specialized VoIP phone which operates very much like a traditional phone, or a computer microphone and software to allow dialing. Just be aware that since your phone line is connected through your computer, you won't have phone service if your computer crashes or there is a power outage. Also check any limitations on 911 dialing before you sign up.
