How Broadband Turns the Internet Into Kids' Stuff
The Internet has become a major source of information, education and entertainment for children.
A recent Computer Economics study states that more than 77 million kids under the age of 16 were online in 2005. That figure is expected to continually increase, thanks, in part, to broadband Internet access.
What can high-speed Internet access through a cable modem, digital subscriber line (DSL) or wireless connection mean for young Internet users?
In a March 2000 survey by the U.S. National School Boards Foundation, Grunwald Associates and the Children's Television Workshop, almost half of the children living in households connected to the Internet go online to do schoolwork.
Encyclopedias, around-the-clock news sites, dictionaries and other sources of information can be quickly accessed.
Children can tap into an exciting, new online world of entertainment where 3D graphics, full-motion video and digital audio are deployed to enhance games, movies, sports, music and other leisure-time pursuits.
Be warned: Children who surf the Internet can be prey for online marketing scammers, pornographers, privacy invaders and other unsavory types. But there are ways to protect kids, while maintaining their online independence.
When vigilant parents take preventive measures, all of the broadband advantages that they enjoy at work and home - the connection is always on; it delivers World Wide Web pages in the blink of an eye; and it supports applications like telephone service, and streaming audio and video - can be enjoyed by their young ones, as well.
